What to Know Before Buying a Mobility Scooter

If you have limited mobility, a mobility scooter can provide an affordable way to get out and about and protect your independence. In fact, there are 6.8 million American residents who use mobility aids on a daily basis.

However, there are hundreds of different types of mobility scooters to choose from. So making sure you buy the right one for your needs may seem daunting.

Fortunately, we have compiled a list of questions you should be asking before you purchase a scooter. This will help you to avoid making mistakes and get the perfect scooter for you. Read on to find out more.

Do You Need to Buy a Mobility Scooter?

The first question you need to ask yourself is why you think you need to buy a mobility scooter.

Motorized mobility scooters are used by people with a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Rheumatism and arthritis
  • Respiratory diseases such as emphysema
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Spine or limb injuries

If you have mobility issues caused by one of these conditions, then you should consider a mobility scooter. However, it is worth checking with a medical professional first.

Some conditions will get worse over time. So, while a mobility scooter might be appropriate now, in a year’s time it may no longer be suitable for your needs. If your disability worsens, it could be the case that an electric wheelchair is more suitable for your needs.

What Is Your Budget?

The next thing you need to think about before buying a mobility scooter is how you are going to pay for it.

You may be able to get Medicare coverage for 80% of the cost of the scooter. However, you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Your health prevents you from moving around in your home easily.
  • You are unable to do activities such as bathing and dressing without assistance.
  • You are able to safely operate the scooter.
  • Both your doctor and the scooter supplier are enrolled with Medicare.
  • Your home is suitable for using a scooter.

If your doctor does not say that a scooter is necessary but you feel that it would still improve your quality of life, you can still purchase one. Some mobility scooter suppliers offer payment plans where you won’t have to pay the full amount up front. But it is always worth checking what you can afford and do some shopping around first.

How Many Wheels?

Mobility scooters come in different configurations. Depending on how you intend to use your scooter, you can choose between a two, three or four-wheeled vehicle.

  • Two-wheeled models are quicker but less stable.
  • Three-wheeled scooters are lightweight and suitable for indoor and outdoor travel.
  • Four-wheeled models are heavier and more stable. They can travel across different terrain and surfaces.

If you are unsure which model will best suit your needs, ask your scooter supplier to talk you through the pros and cons of each one.

Will You Need Accessories?

Most scooters that you buy come as the basic model, with no extras. However, you may wish to consider which, if any, accessories you will need. Some popular accessories for mobility scooters include:

  • Basket
  • Extra battery
  • Cane/crutch holder
  • Ramp
  • Cup holder
  • Plastic rain cover

Any accessories you choose will increase the cost of the scooter. But if they are going to increase the quality of your life and make the scooter easier to use they will be worth it.

Where Will You Use Your Mobility Scooter?

How you intend to use your scooter will influence which one you choose to buy.

As we’ve already mentioned, scooters come in different models. So if you are planning on going off-road you should consider a more stable four-wheeled option.

Vegas on a mobility scooter

Another factor that you need to consider is whether you plan on traveling with your scooter. If you plan on transporting your scooter in your car, you will need to check that it will fit. You will also need a lift or a ramp to in order to position the scooter in your car.

If you need to buy a new vehicle in order to accommodate a scooter it will have ramifications for your budget. So always discuss this with the scooter supplier first.

Traveling on public transport or airplanes are additional factors you may need to consider. A lot of cities have accessible buses and public transport now, although it is a smart move to check before you travel.

Taking your scooter overseas can be a great way to boost your independence and have a more fulfilling vacation. But always check with the airline about what arrangements you need to make before you fly.

Try Before You Buy

Buying a mobility scooter could change your life. If you are struggling with your mobility it is probably limiting what you do and when you do it.

A scooter can give you the extra independence and confidence to get out and about and increase your quality of life. This is why it is so important that you get the right one.

It’s unlikely that you would buy a shirt without trying it on, so don’t invest in a scooter without trying it out first.

You may like the look of a particular model of scooter, and it might tick all your boxes. But if you try it out and it is not comfortable, or even causes you pain, it is the wrong model for you.

All reputable scooter suppliers will let you try scooters before buying. So always make sure you have sampled a few before taking the plunge.

Rejuvaderm MD - At Home Professional Handheld Microdermabrasion Machine

Microdermabrasion at home: Best Machine 2019 (Dermatologist Suggests)

Microdermabrasion at home

Microdermabrasion at home
You can do it at home

Your face is the first thing people see. According to research, it takes only 7 seconds to leave a strong first impression. And although I like the idea of taking people as they are, and not judge books by their cover, I also like to have a healthy beautiful skin. It helps me smile, boosts my confidence, and gives me one less thing to worry about.

I’m sure you already know that you can do microdermabrasion in the comfort of your home. If you pick the right equipment then I confirm to you that it’s also effective and safe.

Before we pick the best microdermabrasion machine for you, let’s look at some of the benefits of having your own microdermabrasion system.

Why you should consider having your own microdermabrasion machine

  1. The biggest benefit of performing microdermabrasion at home is definitely the cost. A good home microdermabrasion system will pay for itself in as little as one or two uses. Just compare the price of a home microdermabrasion machine with a treatment at your local beauty clinic.
  2. You will also save a lot of time as there is no longer need to drive to the other side of the town or sit in the waiting room at the spa or clinic.

How to pick the best microdermabrasion machine? Check out the comparison tables and reviews below.

After trying several professional and “at home” machines, and talking to our fellow dermatologists, we’ve compiled a comparison table and written reviews of the top machines available today. The units are a bit different in features so pick one that’s suitable for you.

Best microdermabrasion machines comparison table

In the table below you’ll find the “top of the shelf” systems for a serious home user.

My current favorite is the Kendal. It has helped me a lot with getting rid of acne and acne scars. It’s also helped me to win back my confidence in the job market as well as everyday social settings (I didn’t feel very confident dating).

Kendal Professional Diamond Best Microdermabrasion Machine HB-SF01

For a smooth, rejuvenated and vibrant skin, this machine can be used with ease in the comfort of your home.

The process: after exfoliation using the sterile diamond heads, this microdermabrasion machine vacuums out the dirt particles and the dead skin.

Included in the package: It comes with 2 dermabrasion skin handles, 9PC Diamond tips; 3 large, 3 medium and 3 small, each category with a fine, medium and coarse tip, 360 cotton filters (240 small and 120 large), an air hose for the Diamond filter and a power cable.

This Kendal unit comes with a 1-year warranty.

  1. Microdermabrasion procedure is non-surgical, so there are no side-effects. Kendal uses sterile diamond heads to exfoliate the layer of dead skin cells followed by vacuuming off the dirt particles and dead skin.
  2. This unit is crystal-free, reducing the risk of ingestion and getting into the eyes. This makes a great benefit against machines with the micro-crystal flow.
  3. Its suction power is strong enough to remove all the dirt particles and the dead skin cells from your skin without causing injury to it. This thus means that this microdermabrasion machine can be used closer to the eyes and mouth as there is no risk of ingestion, inhalation or the particles getting into the eyes.
  4. Very easy to maintain and clean. Kendal comes with 360 cotton filters, each one for single use. The Diamond tips can be cleaned easily with a soft toothbrush and some hot water.

  1. Its Diamond tips are very small and can be lost easily. They are so small that they can even be flushed down a sink. So be careful when cleaning.
  2. It measures 16.9 by 12.2 by 16.3 Inches and weighs 9 Pounds. Nothing too big for home use but you wouldn’t take it with you in a purse.

This microdermabrasion kit is suitable for all skin types. We’ve seen it most helpful with relief from acne, black spots and white spots, age spots, issues with pigmentation and uneven skin tone, rough skin and dry skin. It has also proven to work in getting rid of the fine lines, wrinkles, and superficial scars.

It also helps to bring back the glow and vibrancy of your skin as well as put a smile on your face. I am a big fan of this Kendal unit and, in my opinion, this is the best microdermabrasion machine available on the market today.

New Spa NS-01 microdermabrasion machine

The kit includes one microdermabrasion unit, a set of 2 wands and 9 diamond tips, a silicone hose, 18 and 12 mm filters, replacement “O” rings, cosmetic headband, sulphate-free facial cleaner, after-treatment DMAE serum and a user manual.

  1. Good suction power (up to 16 inHg vacuum suction)
  2. Professional grade machine – some dermatologists use it in their beauty salon
  3. This thing is amazing on blackheads and whiteheads
  4. Helps to lessen/remove superficial scars
  5. Great for tightening pores (no more gaping holes on my face, in fact, they are hardly noticeable now)
  6. Makes skin less oily (I have changed from using a mattifying lotion to an actual light moisturizer)
  7. Smoothens and softens skin (also, now my face has a youthful color to it)
  8. I love the case it comes with. Makes it portable and easy to take with you.

  1. The tips wear out after some use and need to be replaced.
  2. Doesn’t come with a thorough instruction booklet. Go to this link to get your instruction manual: http://new-spa.us/microdermabrasionguides

Extra usage tips:

  • Make sure you wash and exfoliate your skin before using any of the diamond tips. Get what you can off your skin with a gentle scrub and it’ll make microdermabrasion more effective.
  • Make sure you follow the manual on how and where to use the different diamond tips. The tips come in different levels of coarseness; make sure you use the correct one so you don’t end up scratching or bruising your skin.
  • Also don’t just crank up the vacuum to the highest setting from the get-go. This unit is quiet but it doesn’t mean it’s not working. It’s got quite powerful suction so be careful not to bruise your face.

Kendal HB-SF02

  1. Built for professionals: dermatologists, aestheticians
  2. Great suction power (27+ inHg)
  3. Rejuvenation of sun damaged skin – face, neck, shoulders, back, arms, and legs
  4. Reduction of age spots
  5. Minimization of blotchy skin coloring
  6. Reduction of acne and superficial scars from past injury
  7. Extraction of blackheads and whiteheads
  8. Reduction of oily skin
  9. Improvement of overall skin health –you will have a healthy, shiny, and beautiful skin.

  1. Would like more thorough instructions
  2. Diamond heads can be difficult to clean

More usage tips:

  • I recommend using skin moisturizer with sun block after treatment because the exfoliation leaves the skin dry and “scratched” up.
  • It works best in conjunction with Alpha-hydroxy peels and Retin-A. However, cease the use of peels and Retin-A at least 5 days before your next microdermabrasion treatment.
  • If this is your first time with microdermabrasion, wait a couple of weeks before your next treatment. I was concerned about some of the reviews who said they were using it every 3 or 4 days.
  • For best results, use sweeping motions. Avoid leaving the suction tip in one place for too long to avoid abrasions and redness.

Best Handheld microdermabrasion units

These are the more portable units you can take with you to treat yourself and your skin on the go.

I have both, an at-home-machine and a handheld unit. I used to use the portable one a lot but now I don’t need it so much because I’m happy with how my skin looks. It’s still good to have one when I’m away from home.

This microdermabrasion kit works well as an anti-aging skin care treatment kit, exfoliation kit, and pore extraction Rejuvaderm MD - At Home Professional Handheld Microdermabrasion Machine kit and is a great replacement to the numerous scrubs and comes really close to a professional microdermabrasion treatment that you’ve probably experienced at a dermatologist or a spa clinic.

Rejuvaderm system is crystal free and has shown a noticeable effect in reducing wrinkles, fine lines, blackheads, sunburned skin, liver spots and age spots. It also helps with enlarged pores and congested pores.

What we like about Rejuvaderm MD:

  • It’s more than just a microdermabrasion machine. Rejuvaderm MD is a three-in-one kit that helps rejuvenate your skin in the following ways:
    1. Exfoliation – peel the top wrinkly layers of skin with a diamond tip (medical grade, crystal-free) and bring out the fresh rejuvenated skin that lies underneath.
    2. Extraction – use the suction to remove dirt, oil, and sebum from your pores. Rejuvaderm MD comes with a four-level suction motor so you can adjust the strength to your needs (it is advisable to start with the lowest strength and move up as needed).
    3. Infusion – you’ll see faster and better effects from your regular skin care products as the softened skin enables for better absorption.
  • Relatively easy maintenance – replace filter after each use (it comes with a bag of filters) and clean the diamond tip every three months. I especially like Rejuvaderm because I don’t have to worry about replacing stuff often.
  • No need to use more than twice a week. Usually, once a week is enough.
  • Trophy Skin is a reputable company known for good customer service. They emailed me after purchase and asked how happy am I with the device. We haven’t needed the customer service but it’s good to know that they are there when you need them.
  • Take it with you. Rejuvaderm is small – comparable to an electric toothbrush –, lightweight (6.4 oz) and silent, unlike the other brands I’ve tried.

What they could do better:

  • A cleaning tool for the Diamond head is not included with the purchase of this product. It is recommended to use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner to clean the diamond tips every 3-6 months depending on the amount of usage. Here’s a jewelry cleaner that is inexpensive ($99.99 $29.99) and many of our readers recommend.

All-in-all it’s a great device, and our number two recommendation at the moment. It has shown to work greatly in removing blackheads and acne for a lot of users.  You’ll witness a noticeable difference in the size of your enlarged pores or congested pores in just one week. Even more, your skin will glow more and feel much softer and smoother.

Rejuvaderm MD comes with a well-written user manual that will guide you step by step through the process of microdermabrasion at home.

Microdermabrasion Case Studies

Stories from us, our friends and our readers. Let’s have a closer look at how microdermabrasion has worked for certain conditions, which clinic or machine was effective, and how did we go about the whole procedure.

Does microdermabrasion help with acne?

Helen’s Story

I’ve been struggling with moderate acne since 9th grade. At first, I was prescribed with some acne pills which I’ve forgotten what they were called. Interestingly, the pills actually worked, but about 4 months later my acne reappeared.

I guess the acne developed an immunity to the drug and returned just as strong as before.

Then over the next two to three years I battled with my acne in various different ways. I don’t even remember all the treatments I tried.

I think the first time I came across microdermabrasion was by total chance. My mom had gifted me a beauty spa visit and when I went there I got to choose between all these treatments.

I went with microdermabrasion and although the first treatment didn’t get rid of my acne, it made my skin feel much better and fresh. So I decided to go back like two weeks later. Then once more 2 weeks later for another treatment.

It was after the third treatment that I started noticing an improvement with my acne. I wanted to keep taking the treatments but, to be honest, it was starting to get a bit too pricey for me. I paid $90 per one session at the time.

So I looked around for cheaper clinics and that’s when I found out that you can also do microdermabrasion at home. I totally stumbled upon it by accident and thought I’d give it a try.

At first, I thought the machine must cost thousands of dollars, so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I can get one for a few hundred.

I asked around and did a bit of research myself and decided to go with the Kendal unit. At first, I gave myself a treatment about once every 3-4 days. After like 7 or 8 treatments, 80% of my acne had disappeared. I was really happy with the results so I kept doing the treatments once a week, on weekends, until my acne disappeared almost totally.

I now use it only once about every two weeks and my skin looks amazing.

I’ve heard that microdermabrasion doesn’t work for everybody but it worked for me and I think it’s definitely worth the try.

More information about Microdermabrasion at home and in general

Benefits of microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that has been used by many celebrities for so long to enhance their beauty instead of more invasive methods such as plastic surgery, Botox injections, and chemical peels. It is actually the perfect instant face-lift. This procedure is all about the removal of the layer of dead skin cells and in turn revealing the underlying young and healthy skin.

  • Promotes the production of new skin cells
  • Encourages the production of collagen and elastin, the two determinants of elasticity of the skin. This thus improves the appearance of the skin without going through an intensive procedure such as dermabrasion.
  • Helps soften fine lines, wrinkles and also smoothes rough skin – characteristics associated with aging skin. Microdermabrasion is a great anti-aging strategy.
  • Works even better in getting rid of acne, black spots, white spots, age spots, uneven skin tones, sunburn spots, superficial scars, dry skin and stretch marks.
  • Refines enlarged pores and opens up clogged pores.

Cost of microdermabrasion

Depending on the expertise of the person performing this procedure, the location of the office or spa, the amount of skin on which the procedure is to be carried out, the amount of time and effort put into the whole process and many other factors, the cost of microdermabrasion may vary greatly from spa to spa and from one person to another.

It costs approximately between $75 and $300 for a single microdermabrasion session. In a salon or spa, it mostly ranges from $75 to $200 while in medical offices and dermatology clinics, it is more expensive and can fall anywhere between $100 and $300.

Microdermabrasion can also be performed in the comfort of your home. It costs between $15 and $200 to get the microdermabrasion kit and you’ll be ready to enjoy the beauty benefits of your investment.

Frequently Asked Questions about Microdermabrasion

  • What is microdermabrasion?

The beauty of the skin is usually judged by its suppleness and outlook, a thing that can never be achieved with tons of dead skin cells piling on its surface.

Well, thanks to this non-invasive and non-surgical cosmetic procedure by the name microdermabrasion, you can easily get rid of the outermost layer of dead skin cells also known as Stratum corneum by simply exfoliating it mechanically.

Microdermabrasion involves the use of an exfoliating material in the form of crystals known as Corundum or diamond flakes and a suction machine that lifts up the skin during exfoliation. The use of exfoliating scrubs may also be categorized under microdermabrasion.

You can find a more thorough overview of microdermabrasion on MedicineNet.

  • Is microdermabrasion safe?

Yes, microdermabrasion is a safe cosmetic procedure. Unlike more invasive procedures such as plastic surgery, Botox injections, chemical peels and laser resurfacing that may present side effects, microdermabrasion focuses on the outermost layer of the skin thus no chemicals will get into the body easily. In the case of ingestion, the Condurum is non-toxic and it is also not associated with Cancer or contact reactions thus safe to use on skin. Though it is not a traumatic procedure, it is advisable to seek permission from your dermatologist before performing this procedure.

  • Does microdermabrasion hurt?

This procedure is not painful at all. Only the dead skin cells are peeled off your skin and inhaled by the vacuum which could lead to a rough feeling on the skin and a little discomfort during the procedure. You may experience redness of the skin immediately after microdermabrasion but this is not to worry about as it can be easily covered with cosmetics. You should make sure to use moisturizer and sunscreen after this for a well-moisturized skin and protection from the effects of the sun.

  • How often should you do microdermabrasion?

Since this procedure does not present side effects, the ultimate choice depends on you. Depending on the condition of your skin, your budget, and the desired results, it can be performed weekly for even up to 8 weeks. Though, this should be done in moderation to give the skin enough time to rejuvenate.

KD Smart Chair

Electric Wheelchairs: The Ultimate Guide to Power Wheelchairs (2019)

(includes reviews and best chairs)

In this guide, you’ll learn:

  • How your medical condition determines the features of your Power Wheelchair
  • How to pick a chair that meets your intended use (indoor/outdoor, traveling)
  • Different ways to fund your power wheelchair purchase (medicare, medicaid, etc)

There are several factors pertaining to the powered wheelchair that should be considered before potentially spending thousands of unreturnable dollars.

Let’s start with the first factor that is inevitably the most important: funding. What financial routes are available to the customer in order to buy a powered wheelchair?

Note: Looking for a mobility scooter rather than a power wheelchair? Study our article about mobility scooters instead.

Your medical condition and how that will determine the features of your electric wheelchair

1. Musculoskeletal conditions: This includes a wide array of medical issues that negatively impact muscle tissue and the overall positioning of the body at rest: cerebral palsy, post-stroke, multiple sclerosis, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, muscular dystrophy, Guillian-Barre syndrome, etc. Muscle weakness, atrophy, and hypertonicity will impact how each and every joint moves or freezes in place.

Look at the following scenario as an example:

Dorothy is a 46-year old female residing in a skilled nursing facility. She experienced a traumatic brain injury 4 months ago that has left her paralyzed from the neck down. Although she has regained almost full cognitive function and use of her hands, Dorothy is unable to move from her chest down which has resulted in serious atrophy at her hips, knees, and feet.

Skilled clinicians would be able to ascertain what type of seating system would benefit Dorothy. Persons who have limited trunk control and hip mobility would sit more comfortably in a tilt-in-space seat versus a captain seat.

Captain's chair vs Tilt-in-space

2. Respiratory disorders: Persons with acute or chronic breathing problems may require the constant use of an oxygen tank. If that is the case, you might want to look at wheelchairs that can accommodate for a tank holder and cord. You could also look into lightweight, portable oxygen systems which save them money and energy on tank refills (e.g. this).

3. Spinal conditions: The resting position of the spine will determine the most appropriate back and head support. Such conditions include scoliosis, lordosis, kyphosis, spinal fusions, and herniated discs. Attempting to force an atypical spine into a standard captain seat could result in unnecessary pain and/or further deformity. Medical equipment specialists can provide details about various back supports (contour, custom mold, padding, etc.) available.

4. Skin disorders: This specifically pertains to pressure ulcers that are secondary to other conditions. For example, people with Type II diabetes are prone to skin breakdown which can result in non-healing wounds or ulcers. Movement disorders which force persons to remain in one position for too long can also result in non-healing or staged pressure ulcers that are fatal if left untreated. Individuals who are seated in powered wheelchairs for a prolonged period of time, and who do not have the capacity to pressure-relieve (lift themselves up with the assist of their arms) are at a high risk for skin breakdown (i.e. paralysis from the neck down). If this is the case, then the customer needs to seriously consider custom padding, tilt-in-space features, and specialized wheelchair cushions that can provide the relief for them.

5. Visual disorders: Acknowledgement of visual deficits is really an acknowledgement of safety concerns in operating a powered wheelchair. Users who can simply correct visual problems with glasses or contacts should be able to safely operate a powered wheelchair. Persons with more serious conditions including macular degeneration, cataracts, tunnel vision, hemianopsia, etc. should consult with an eye specialist and their primary physician to determine if they have the appropriate eyesight to operate a chair with a motor.

6. Cognitive disorders: This is similar to visual impairments in that the individual needs to recognize whether or not they have the cognitive capacity to operate a powered wheelchair. Cognitive disorders include dementia, post-stroke, traumatic brain injury, or any other type of condition that negatively impacts someone’s safety awareness for themselves and for others around them. If the individual attempts to operate a powered wheelchair with a known cognitive condition, it could result in serious injury to themselves and to anyone that might get in their propulsion path.

Lastly, the customer needs to determine the type of environment(s) that the chair will be used in and how frequently the chair will need to be transported:

Indoor or outdoor use

Indoor use: Indoor residences can include private homes, nursing facilities, hospitals, and assistive living centers. Indoor surfaces include both private residences and public buildings/facilities (restaurants, doctor’s offices, schools, churches, department stores, etc). Potential surfaces are generally predictable and smooth (i.e. carpet, tile, linoleum, cement, wood, etc). Aside from the surface of the floor, powered wheelchair users must also consider space between barriers. If the user is located in an assistive living situation in the U.S., then it is more than likely that their living quarters is accessible enough for a powered wheelchair. For private, older homes, the customer needs to consider the following spaces and measurements: porch size, steps, doorway widths, hallways, bathroom space, door thresholds, bedroom space, kitchen space, stationery and non-stationery furnishings, etc.

Persons that are buying a powered wheelchair for strictly indoor use can be flexible about the type of wheel placement their chair will have. For example, there are multiple Jazzy powered wheelchairs that come with mid-wheel technology that is specifically designed for indoor surfaces and for maneuvering around tight spaces as seen in a private home (e.g. manufacturers like this and this).

Outdoor use: Propelling a powered chair in the community allows tremendous independence and access, but comes with a high level of unpredictability. Surfaces include sidewalk cracks, grates, curbs, gutters, thresholds, ramps, grass, mud, and gravel. Weather changes like precipitation will drastically change those surfaces with puddles and ice, which can cause the powered wheelchair to lose traction. Customers who plan on using a chair for community use need to ensure that the chair they are interested in was designed for outdoor use. Any mid-wheel system with small castor wheels was NOT created for indoor use and will result in stalling the chair and/or injury to the user. Outdoor chairs must have larger castor wheels with a front-wheel system that can navigate variable terrain.

Transporting your wheelchair and traveling with it

Public transit use: Transit includes subways, buses, and taxis which are available depending on what country you reside in. For accessible transit systems, call the company ahead of time to inquire about wheelchair access. Today, most subway and bus systems have ramps and chair space available with lock-in systems that prevent the chair from rolling while in transit. Some companies have specialized vans that accommodate for powered wheelchair users who wish to remain seated in their wheelchair during the ride, but they often require a phone-call reservation. NOTE: In the United States, public transit and public facilities have to meet the bare minimum ADA guidelines (American Disabilities Act). They are not obligated to modify their measurements for persons who are bariatric or morbidly obese. This means that if the powered wheelchair is wider or heavier than ADA regulations, then public transit systems reserve the right to not allow the customer on to the bus, van, or subway.

Transport: With purchasing a wheelchair often comes spending money on transport equipment. Such equipment includes car lifts and ramps. If the customer can get away with a standard wheelchair frame with very few customizations, then a powered, foldable frame would be the cheapest option. The customer can simply collapse the frame down and throw it into the trunk of a car. For heavier, more unique chairs (tilt-in-space, bariatric chairs), customers will need to research wheelchair vans, interior lifts, exterior lifts, etc. Some individuals who are in a home-bound situation or reside in assistive living will potentially have access to transport vans already that can accommodate for full-sized powered chairs. In those cases, purchasing a ramp or lift may be unnecessary.

Funding your power wheelchair purchase

  1. Out-of-pocket purchase: If the customer has the money, and wishes to purchase a chair immediately, then they could make full payment on whatever product they wish. However, a quick purchase means forfeiting other financial routes that could save them money and potentially cutting research too short and settling for a chair that is not a good fit for them. Out-of-pocket purchases could be made at online stores as well as in person at local medical equipment shops.
  2. Rental or loan agreements: Temporarily renting a powered wheelchair is a viable option for anyone who is struggling to obtain full funding for their own chair. Additionally, it is a convenient option for those who wish to get their own chair someday and want a demo opportunity to test out whether or not the chair is a good fit for them and their living situation. For example, a customer may choose to rent a wheelchair in order to see if the product will fit through their home doors, bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, porch, and so on.
  3. Used equipment/Classified Ads: Local online and newspaper ads will occasionally have chairs for sale in the community as privately sold by the owner. One plus about going this route is that the chair will be infinitely cheaper than buying it brand new. Possible down-sides include buying a used chair, a chair that is broken, and/or a chair that is missing parts. Any defects on the product would be the customer’s responsibility to fix since the owner would have no obligation to make the repairs unless they find it worth their while.
  4. Insurance coverage: Lastly, customers could pursue the health insurance route. If they have a current insurance policy, the customer could gain partial to full coverage on a powered wheelchair if they are willing to wait up to several months.

In order to avoid any confusion, we will be strictly addressing insurance coverage as it pertains to United States federal and private policies as of 2016. According to Medicare and Medicaid guidelines, federal insurance is obligated to cover one or the other every 5 years: a walker or a wheelchair which includes either a manual or a powered chair (with very VERY few exceptions).

Medicare has two distinctions: the “Original Medicare” which is standard Medicare and the “Medicare Advantage Plan” which takes the form of HMOs or PPOs (such as getting a Medicare policy through Select Health or Humana). Original Medicare has its own set of policies as far as wheelchair coverage and Medicare Advantage Plans can be drastically different about coverage opportunities depending on which insurance company it originates from. Medicare Part A (original Medicare) does not cover powered wheelchairs. Thus, persons covered by Medicare should obtain a Medicare B supplement which does partially cover chairs and other durable medical equipment (DME). Individuals obtaining coverage should expect to pay for at least 20% of the full price for the powered wheelchair. Read here for more information on how to get Medicare to pay for your wheelchair.

Medicaid rules vary state to state, but in general provide some type of coverage for powered wheelchairs. The difference is that the equipment needs to be deemed medically necessary by a primary physician for HOME USE ONLY (private residence, assistance living, nursing homes, etc.) Persons looking for powered wheelchairs for outdoor or community use will be denied coverage.

Private policies through insurance companies (Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Select Health, Aetna, etc.) have specific rules per policy regarding powered wheelchair coverage. Policy holders that are approved for coverage should still expect to pay a small portion of the full price.

Regardless of whether coverage comes from Medicare, Medicaid, or a private policy, you must start the process by obtaining a doctor’s order (signed and dated) for a powered wheelchair. That order is then taken to a medical equipment provider company that accepts the customer’s insurance. An assessment for chair parts and body positioning is conducted by a tech specialist and a rehabilitation specialist (usually a physical or an occupational therapist). The assessment is then submitted to insurance for approval, which can take time. Once funding is approved, then the medical equipment company can construct and deliver the chair.

9 things to consider when buying a mobility scooter, Infographic

Are you considering to buy a mobility scooter? Take a look at the main features and questions you should ask yourself or the future scooter owner to make sure you save yourself from trouble.

To help you make a better decision and one that’s based on a thoughtful process rather than opinion, I’ve created an infographic that shows you what you should focus on when buying an electric powered mobility scooter.

traveling with a mobility scooter

Traveling with a mobility scooter

Mobility scooters can give you back your independence. Almost anywhere you used to visit or plan to visit can be accessible with a mobility scooter. However, you need to plan your trips a little more carefully when you have an electric powered scooter or a wheelchair.

traveling with a mobility scooter

Flying to a destination

If you’re going to fly to destination you will want to check with the individual airlines about their policies on shipping mobility scooters. You will likely need to send your power scooter in the cargo area of the plane. Batteries generally have specific shipping requirements for safety reasons. Read this article when traveling with American Airlines.

Most airports have wheelchairs available to transport you on and off the plane. You may also be able to access special transportation between terminals. If you have layovers, particularly in large airports, you may want to call ahead and see what services they offer. You don’t want to miss a flight or get injured trying to get to your plane on time.

Transporting your mobility scooter around

You also need to ensure that once you get to your destination you can transport your mobility scooter. If you’re going to rent a vehicle make sure you find one that’s large enough to accommodate your scooter. Some scooters fold down for easy transport. See this comparison table for easy reference when choosing a mobility scooter.

You might want to check with a few car rental agencies to see which ones offer vehicles that meet your needs. Some carry vehicles that are accessible and can accommodate wheelchairs and scooters.

Public transportation

If you plan to use public transportation many cities have accessible buses and vans. Some of these transportation services allow you to call from anywhere in the city and get a ride. You may also be able to access discounts for seniors and people with disabilities that can help lower the cost of transportation.

Protecting your power scooter

Even if you plan on taking your own vehicle, which is equipped to transport your mobility scooter you want to make sure your scooter is protected. If you’re transporting the scooter inside of the car secure it so that the scooter doesn’t spend the ride getting tossed about.

If your scooter is attached to a dock outside of the car you may want to invest in a cover. Long trips increase the chance of encountering extreme weather and flying rocks. You wouldn’t want your scooter to get damaged. You may want to remove the battery and place it inside the car if you think there’s a chance of encountering wet weather.

Be aware of your scooter’s range

Always be aware of your scooter’s range. Mobility scooters vary quite a lot in how far they can go on a single charge. You don’t want to be in the middle of the city or at the Grand Canyon and suddenly be without power.

Going to National Parks

You will need to consider where you will charge your scooter and how to maximize your traveling range. Some places, like the Grand Canyon, offer buses to transport you between sites of interest.

Rather than taking a mobility scooter the whole length you can see a certain area, hop on a bus, and go to another area saving yourself miles of travel that might require a charge.

Most national parks and monuments try to be as accessible as possible. Again it is always smart to call ahead and see what’s offered and if you need to make advanced arrangements. You may be able to request special tours or assistance reaching less accessible sites but only if you ask ahead of time.

Best Tennis Ball Machines to Improve Your Game in 2019

Improve your tennis game with tennis ball machines but don’t buy just any tennis ball machine.

Not all tennis ball machines are the same so you’ll want to figure out what are the most important features for you and then pick a machine that suits your needs and is of good quality.

So features are one thing but don’t be relying just on the features. Manufacturers are clever adding features that sound good and make them sales but have little or no actual value when it comes to improving your tennis game, which is what actually matters. So beware and don’t pick just the first machine. Instead, do your research and pick a tennis ball machine that has good customer reviews from previous buyers, comes from a well-known manufacturer that stands behind their product, offers warranty and a customer service should you need it.

Best Tennis Ball Machines Under $1000

These are the machines that don’t feature complicated drills and such but are great for beginners who want to practice their technique.

Lobster Elite Freedom

Price: $839

Elite Freedom tennis ball machine

Buy Lobster Elite Freedom

This tennis ball machine is best suited for the beginner. It is the cheapest machine that Lobster Sports offers and it comes with some pretty neat features for its price.

Battery-powered and weighing only 35 pounds, Lobster Elite Freedom is the best portable tennis ball machine for the price (in my experience).

Elite Freedom runs 2-4 hours on a single charge, which is more than enough for my needs. If you want more court time just plug it into a nearby AC/DC output. You’ll need an extension cord for that.

It’s easy to fit in your car and thanks to the oversized wheels it’s easy to move around, even when the ball hopper is loaded fully with 150 balls.

For the price, Elite Freedom has some pretty advanced features:

  • Full corner-to-corner horizontal oscillation
  • Large ball capacity of 150 balls
  • Up to 50-degree elevation to practice your overheads
  • Speed 20-65 MPH
  • Great portability (oversized wheels, extendable handle, battery-powered)
Horizontal oscillation
Horizontal Oscillation

It doesn’t feature topspin/backspin options and there’s no vertical oscillation possibility. Also, there’s no remote available for this model.

Elite Freedom Control Panel
Elite Freedom Control Panel

Elite Freedom is a great model if you’re just starting out and want to practice your shots and enhance the technique. It doesn’t allow for complicated drills or anything like that and it certainly doesn’t replace a coach or a good drilling partner.

Buy Lobster Elite Freedom

If you want a tennis ball machine with additional features while keeping the budget under $1000 then take a look at the Lobster Elite Liberty model below.

Lobster Elite Liberty

Price: $949

Elite Liberty tennis ball machine

Buy Lobster Elite Liberty

This is another tennis ball machine for under $1000 that I dare to recommend.

With ball speeds up to 70 MPH and heavy topspin and backspin capabilities, Elite Liberty is a suitable machine for a beginner to an intermediate player.

Elite Liberty comes with all the features that Elite Freedom offers and more. Compared to Elite Freedom, this model offers:

  • More speed. With ball speeds up to 70 MPH, you get faster shots from your opponent.
  • Spin. Flat, topspin and backspin options. Topspin and underspin options are adjustable from the panel with 4 different strengths. Go from easy to heavy spin.
  • Optional fast charger. Comes with a basic charger (12-16 hours), but if you want faster charging times then you can get an optional fast charger (4-6 hours).
  • Optional remote control. Control the feed, spin etc with a special remote or via your smartphone (iPhone and Android apps available).
Top and backspin
Elite Liberty offers heavy top and back spin

Elite Liberty comes with just as good of a portability as the Elite Freedom model we looked at previously. The battery will give you 2-4 hours of court time on a single charge and the 35 lbs weight, its wheels and small dimensions make it easy to handle and transport.

Use this machine to practice your shots and technique as well as improve your footwork and overall fitness. It’s great when you don’t have a drill partner available or just want to take your game up a level.

Buy Lobster Elite Liberty

If you’re looking for more speed and features then take a look at the Elite One model below.

Lobster Elite One

Price: $1139

Lobster Elite One tennis ball machine

Buy Lobster Elite One

Another portable yet affordable tennis ball machine from Lobster Sports.

Lobster Elite One comes with all the features that Elite Liberty has and more.

Compared to Elite Liberty this model has:

  • More speed. Speed range of 20 – 80 MPH to improve your reaction time.
  • More court time. 4-8 hours on a single charge.
  • It’s a bit heavier because of the larger battery. At 42 lbs it’s still quite easy to lift and transport.
  • More elevation and electronic elevation control. Elite One gives you 0-60 degree lobs. Great for practicing your overheads. Unbeatable compared to other machines on the market and you no longer need to manually set the elevation.
random horizontal oscillation
Elite One brings you Random horizontal oscillation

Improve your forehand and backhand game by playing against full corner-to-corner random horizontal oscillation. Crank the elevation up to 60 degree lobs to practice your overheads and return the heavy backspin and topspin shots to make your game more versatile.

Elite One tennis ball machine is most suitable for a beginner to intermediate level player who wants to up their game by practicing returning a wide range of shots. The improved speed and random horizontal oscillation will enhance your reaction times for returning both backhand and forehand shots. One area where this machine lacks is that it’s missing an option for vertical oscillation.

Buy Lobster Elite One

If you want more oscillation features to further improve your game, then take a look at the Elite Two model below.

Lobster Elite Two

Price: $1419

Lobster Elite Two tennis ball machine

Buy Lobster Elite Two

Lobster Elite Two comes equipped with all the features that Elite One has, and with a minimal cost increase, it adds the advanced triple oscillation.

Nearly all machines come with the horizontal oscillation that allows sweeping from left to right. But if you want to improve your reaction times also on short vs deep shots then you need a machine with vertical oscillation capability.

Triple Oscillation
Elite Two adds Vertical Oscillation

Elite Two adds random vertical oscillation, so you get short shots and deep shots in a random order, taking match play to a whole new level. The horizontal+vertical oscillation allows launching shots randomly all over the court – short, deep, left and right. If total random oscillation is too much, choose the horizontal-only or vertical-only setting.

Elite Two also gives you more action and a better workout.

Oscillation: random horizontal, random vertical
Speed: 20 to 80 mph
Spin: topspin, backspin
Elevation: electronic, 0-60 degrees
Court time: 4-8 hours

I love this machine not only because of the random vertical oscillation but also because of the new handy remote that allows me to control almost all settings from the other side of the court. Use the remote to turn the feed and sweep settings on/off, set the ball speed, elevation, spin (topspin, backspin, and strength of the spin), and change the settings on the go.

Buy Lobster Elite Two

Lobster Elite Three

Price: $1669

Tennis ball machine Lobster Elite 3

Buy Lobster Elite Three

This is a serious tennis ball machine suitable for you if you’re already comfortable with simple shots and need a partner capable for some more complicated shots. Don’t get me wrong, this machine is also suitable for a beginner, but with the addition of two-line oscillation, Elite Three truly simulates professional match play to enhance your game even further.

Triple Oscillation
Tripe Oscillation

In addition to triple oscillation, Elite Three comes equipped with two versatile programs, narrow and wide with variable depth for both forehand and backhand play. This will better your tennis game even faster as it can more closely resemble a real tennis match. In Narrow mode it oscillates in the single-player lines, and in Wide mode in the double lines.

Dual and two-line oscillation
Dual and two-line oscillation

Elite Three weighs 42 lbs and fits 150 balls just like Elite One and Two. With a full hopper, you get a good 15 minutes or practice time. Ball speed is 20-80 MPH and it gives you court time 4-8 hrs. Comes with a battery and a standard charger.

Like all Lobster machines, Elite Three comes with a 2-year warranty and good responsive US customer service.

In my experience, this is the best tennis ball machine if you don’t need drills and total random oscillation. If you want something more serious (like drills), then take a look at Lobster’s Elite Grand Series.

Buy Lobster Elite Three

Lobster Elite Grand IV

Price: $1999

Lobster Elite Grand Four

Buy Lobster Elite Grand IV

Elite Grand IV comes equipped with six pre-loaded drills to simulate playing against a real opponent. These are six-shot drills that simulate the most common styles of play: the grinder, power baseliner, all-courter, moonballer, slicer and lefty. These drills mix up ball trajectory, speed and spin to challenge and prepare you for the play against advanced players.

Another reason you’ll like Grand Four is its fully random oscillation. Set it to fully random oscillation and the balls are launched throughout the entire singles court mixing up ball speed, trajectory, backspin, topspin and oscillation. This actually makes it feel like you’re playing against a real opponent. That is just unmatched when comparing to other machines in the industry within any proximity to the price range.

6 pre-loaded drills
Elite Grand IV introduces 6 pre-loaded drills

On top of all that, Grand four comes with an advanced 2-line oscillation function with three settings: Narrow, Medium and Wide. That’s a great feature for improving your backhand and forehand ground strokes while at the same time improving your footwork dramatically.

Just like all the Elite series machines, Elite Grand Four is battery powered (4-8 hours court time). However, the Grand series machines come with a fast charger out-of-the-box, cutting charging time from 12-16 hours down to 2-3 hours.

Ball speed is up to 80 MPH like usual, elevation adjustment is electronic and 0-60 degrees. Weighs 44 pounds and comes with a 2-year warranty like all Lobster tennis ball machines.

Buy Lobster Elite Grand IV

If you are looking for an even more advanced tennis ball machine that allows you to customize your own drills then look at the Grand Five.

Lobster Elite Grand V

Price: $2299

Elite Grand V tennis ball machine

Buy Lobster Elite Grand V

Compared to Elite Grand 4, the Grand 5 tennis ball machines adds 6 more pre-loaded drills to enhance your game even further. The pre-loaded drills are power baseliner, all-courter, grinder, moonballer, slicer, lefty, forehand plus, attack/defend, approach, beginner, intermediate, advanced.

12 pre-loaded drills
Elite Grand V comes equipped with these 12 pre-loaded drills

In addition to the 12 pre-loaded drills, Grand 5 also offers 6 Customized drills that you can program yourself and save for use anytime you like. Customizable drills allow for 6 shots each. Pick a court location from one of the six available locations, set ball speed, spin and feed rate for each shot and enjoy the game.

Grand 5 features random horizontal oscillation, random vertical oscillation, and fully random oscillation. With the fully random oscillation, you get a random ball speed, random spin, and random feed rate with every shot making this machine suitable even for the advanced players.

Weighs 44 pounds and comes with a fast charger included.

The wide range of features makes this tennis ball machine suitable for advanced, intermediate and beginning tennis players. If you’re just starting out then use the simple shots, horizontal oscillation, and perhaps vertical oscillation separately and choose beginner mode from the pre-loaded drills. Then as you have your shots dialed in and as you advance, you can add random oscillation and take on the more complicated drills.

Buy Lobster Elite Grand V LE

This is the most advanced portable (battery powered) tennis ball machine that you can get.

Elite Grand V LE allows you to program and save 12 custom 6-shot drills. Pick from 18 shot locations, that’s more customization than any other machine will provide you with. Then to make your own personalized drill, pick the speed, ball spin, location, and feed rate for each shot and save it. This option alone will dramatically help you enhance your play when preparing even against top tennis players in the world.

Elite Grand V LE also comes equipped with 12 pre-loaded court drills: power baseliner, all-courter, grinder, moonballer, slicer, lefty, forehand plus, attack/defend, approach, beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

12 pre-loaded drills
Elite Grand V LE comes equipped with these 12 pre-loaded drills

Just like all Elite Grand machines, the limited edition comes with Fully Random Oscillation, a great feature that launches balls at total random, random speed, random spin and random feed rate. Fully random oscillation is great for preparing for any and all shots as you never know what’s coming.

Balls speed is 35-80 MPH and the hopper fits 150 balls.

This one weighs 44 pounds and comes with big wheels and a reversible hopper like all Lobster Elite Series machines. The big wheels make it easy to transport on any surface and the reversible hopper makes it easy storing in your car as it really doesn’t take up that much space.

Elite Grand V LE gives you 4-8 hours court time on a single charge. Comes with a fast charger included (2-3 hours charging time instead of 12-14 hours).

Lobster Phenom

Lobster Phenom

Buy Lobster Phenom

This AC powered tennis ball machine comes with super advanced oscillation capabilities: random horizontal oscillation in 3 different depths (short, mid, deep), random vertical oscillation (left, middle, right), 2-line (narrow, medium, wide), and fully random oscillation (random speed, spin and feed rate). This function alone makes Phenom one of the most advanced tennis ball machines, enabling you to enjoy nearly the same practice as real match play.

Phenom comes with 6 pre-programmed drills. These are the 1) power baseliner, 2) all-courter, 3) grinder, 4) moonballer, 5) slicer, 6) lefty. If you want more drills, take a look at the Phenom Two. For a minimum cost increase, you get 12 pre-loaded drills and 12 custom programmable drills to 18 locations.

This machine weighs much more (99 lbs) than the portable battery powered ones (35-44 lbs) from Elite Series, so take that into account when choosing one for your needs as this one is a bit more tricky to transport in a car.

It also has a larger ball capacity – 250 tennis balls compared to the 150 that the battery-powered machines fit.

Ball speed is about the same or slightly higher, 35-80, sometimes up to 85 mph.

The ball launch is located higher, allowing to simulate real play more accurately.

If you want more pre-programmed drills (12) and customizable drills then take a look at the Phenom Two.

Lobster Phenom Two

Buy Lobster Phenom Two

It’s a 99 lbs AC powered tennis ball machine with a 250 ball capacity.

Phenom Two tennis ball machine comes with all the amazing features that Phenom has and adds 6 more pre-programmed drills and 12 custom court drills.

The custom programmable court drills allow up to 6 shots for each. Choose from 18 different ball locations, then choose the ball speed, backspin or topspin and feed rate for each shot. The combinations of different shots this machine permits are infinite. So create your own personalized court drills to simulate real match play and train the areas you most need or want, and take your tennis play up another notch.

Once again, I’m going to have to talk about oscillation here. The random oscillation is just what makes the Phenom machines so great, in my opinion. Pick between horizontal and vertical random oscillation, or use the Fully random oscillation with random location, speed, random spin, and random ball launch feed rate. You really can’t get any more random than that. It’s great for matching real play as well as just for a workout every time you have just an hour of free time available.

This is the most advanced or quite frankly the best tennis ball machine there is available today from Lobster Sports. It’s got the most advanced features and until they come up with a better machine, this is the best you can get.

What to consider when buying a tennis ball machine

Tennis Ball Machine Reviews

Power source

Battery or electrical? Battery powered machines allow for a court time of 2-8 hours on a single charge and save you from the hassle of running a cable across the court. However, most battery tennis ball machines also come with the option to plug into AC/DC should the need arise.

Almost all machines sweep randomly left to right, allowing horizontal oscillation. Cheaper machines allow only horizontal oscillation while the more expensive models also allow vertical oscillation giving you short and deep shots at random. Good machines can mix the two for total random oscillation, both left-to-right and up-and-down for an even better workout.

Some (more expensive) machines come with preloaded drills to enhance your game. Want to practice your forehand or perhaps develop consistency in your game. Pick a drill you want to enhance today and let the machine do its job.

Also, the best tennis ball machines allow programming a custom drill of your own. Pick the location, ball speed, ball spin and feed rate for each shot.

Ball speed

What’s the max speed? Smaller battery power tennis ball machines allow up to 65 MPH ball speed, while the bigger battery/electrical ones allow for 80 MPH or even up to 85 MPH of max ball speed.

Ball spin

Does it allow for topspin and backspin?

Ball feed rate

How often will the balls be launched, usually the setting is 2-10 seconds.

You want to check the degrees and if you must change the elevation manually or electrically? Some machines allow 0-50 degrees while the others allow 0-60 degrees

Ball capacity

How many tennis balls can you load it up with. Smaller models usually fit 150 balls and bigger ones 250 balls.

Remote control

Remote controls are usually optional and allow you to fully control the machine from a distance via wifi. Some models you can even control via your iPhone app (you still need to buy a wifi receiver for the machine).

Launch height

Bigger machines launch the ball from the same height a real player would normally hit in a game to simulate true play as closely as possible.

The weight varies from about 35 pounds for smaller machines and up to 99 pounds for the big ones. Weight is usually not an issue when moving the machine around the court since the machines come on large transport wheels and they’re easy to move around. It’s just something you want to consider if you need to lift it to and from your car. Dimensions are also something you’ll want to consider if you need to move it around in a small car.

Something you’ll most probably not need if you pick a good reliable tennis ball machine from a well-known brand but then again, you’ll never know. Even the best manufacturers mess up at times and when they do, it’s good to have kept your purchase documents. Warranty is also a good indicator of the quality of the manufacturer. If the manufacturer only offers a 3-month warranty, you’ll want to ask yourself why is that? Good companies stand behind their product and offer at least a 1-year warranty on the machine. Battery warranty is usually less and you’ll want to check that separately.

All Lobster Sports tennis ball machines, for example, come with a 2-year warranty for the machine itself and a 6-month warranty on battery and wheels and a 1-year warranty on accessories. You can also buy an additional warranty and extend the warranty period for up to 5 years. That’s a good option if you’re using the machine daily (for rentals for example).

Quite Self-explanatory. Prices range from $800 up to $3,600 depending on all the features listed above.

Would a tennis ball machine improve my game?

A tennis ball machine just by itself does not entirely replace a good coach or a drilling partner. However, there are many advantages to getting a tennis ball machine.

To me, the biggest benefit of owning a tennis ball machine is that when it comes to scheduling my practice I am not dependent on other people. It’s a lot of hassle to find a practice time that suits both me and one of my drill partners, especially on a short notice. And before I got the machine I would lose many valuable practice hours because of that. Now, whenever I get an hour or two off, I just fire up the machine and get some practice in.

Of course, you can’t rely solely on the ball machine to teach you how to play and it can be a disadvantage if your technique is bad and you just instill the bad habit further. Get a camera or even a phone to record yourself and make sure you book a coach every now and then and also play with other players.

It’s hard to find a partner who agrees to feed you balls for 1-2 hours exactly the way you want. So that’s another good thing about a ball machine – it does what you tell it to do. You can have a laid back training or really crank up the pace. And they’re really consistent playing partners who don’t get tired.

While it doesn’t simulate the real play, I’ve found my tennis ball machines has helped me greatly to fill in those gaps when my drilling partners aren’t available. It’s helped me enhance my technique, my footwork and also just the general fitness.

#1 Scooter for traveling (and the most lightweight)

SmartScoot Lithium

Mobility scooter for traveling

If you are looking for a lightweight mobility scooter that you can fit into the trunk of your Toyota Prius or take with you on a cruise ship or airplane, then we suggest you take a closer look at SmartScoot Lithium power travel scooter.

What we like about it

Weighing only 39.5 lbs (18 kg) SmartScoot Lithium is the most lightweight mobility scooter there is. The heaviest section weighs 27 lbs (12 kg), which is the lightest there is on the market today.

Because SmartScoot is so lightweight and easy to fold and unfold it makes it a perfect scooter for traveling and taking it with you in a car. One of the major benefits of SmartScoot is that it fits easily in most automobile trunks and in all SUV’s and Vans. For example, it fits in a Toyota Prius with no issues. Just take off the seat and battery and lift it into the trunk of your car.

at the airport with mobility scooter

Perfect for traveling. You can even take the SmartScoot with you on a cruise ship or airplane. It’s Airlines Approved, just print the FAA documents.

No tools required to fold/unfold. Easily breaks apart into 3 sections.

The frame is made of stainless steel, making it strong, rust-proof and durable.

Unlike most other scooters, SmartScoot Lithium, as the name suggests, comes with a Lithium Ion battery out-of-the-box. That’s one reason why it’s so lightweight. The Lithium Ion battery also gives SmartScoot a longer than average operating range – up to 12 miles with one charge.

The tires are solid rubber so they won’t ever go flat.

What’s not so great about it

It’s pricier than most other scooters so make your own decision if the freedom it can give you is worth the price tag  (I believe it is).

We don’t yet have much information and feedback from the owners of these type of scooters. Enclosed scooters are more luxurious and come with  many extra features like heavy duty batteries, windshield wipers, LCD control displays etc. They are great for those days with less than perfect weather. They are also more expensive than the regular open models.

Six top Mobility Scooter reviews

1. Drive Medical Phoenix 4HD Heavy Duty (Rating 4.8)

Drive Medical Phoenix HD power scooterThe Drive Medical Phoenix 4HD power scooter is ideal for you if you want good comfort but also the ability to take the scooter apart and with you in a car. This model allows you to use it around the house (non-marking tires), outdoors, or pack it up in the car and head out on a road trip.

  • Portability – 4HD can be disassembled into 4 pieces without much effort. When taken into pieces, the heaviest part (front part of the scooter) weighs 46 lbs.
  • Ergonomic throttle control – the hand controls on this scooter make a great option for people with limited hand strength. Ride in comfort instead of struggling to steer your chair.
  • Non-marking tires – if you use your chair around the house a lot you don’t want to be marking up your floors. The tires on this model are easy on your floors and also offer anti-tip protection.
  • Weight capacity – many travel scooters have a low weight capacity to make them more portable. Drive medical keeps the scooter portable while still making it accessible to people weighing up to 350 pounds.
  • Range – you can take the Phoenix 4HD on a cruise for up to 15 miles on a single charge.

If you’re looking for a solid all-around scooter that’s good for both indoors and outdoors as well as traveling and taking with you in your car then Drive Medical Phoenix 4HD Heavy Duty is your best choice.

This model does not come with a headrest so if you have neck problems keep that in mind. If you’re looking for maximum comfort then take a look at the next scooter on the list (Shoprider Sunrunner).

2. Shoprider Sunrunner (Rating: 4.7)

Shoprider Sunrunner mobility scooter reviewThe Shoprider Sunrunner offers a great comfort for the price. This scooter comes completely assembled so all you have to do is plug it in, charge the battery, and then you are ready to go. The seat design allows for easy on and off access. The controls are very intuitive and this chair offers a smooth ride even on a rough terrain. This model really does offer it all and is a great mobility scooter if you’re looking for maximum comfort.

Key features:

  • Choose between the three or four-wheel design – if you need maneuverability in tight spaces you can go with the 3-wheel model. 4-wheel model gives more stability.
  • Headlight package – this model comes standard with a headlight for nighttime safety. Since scooters are low to the ground you want to make sure cars and bicycles can see you easily.
  • Deluxe folding captain’s seat- this seat is super comfortable and offers a headrest for long trips. When you’re ready to store it, it easily folds down which can make a big difference.
  • Controls – the controls are easy to see and allow you to adjust the speed with a twist of a dial. There is also a convenient battery indicator near the speed control.

Shoprider Sunrunner isn’t for you if you’re looking for maximum portability. On the other hand, if you’re looking for an all around good quality power scooter with excellent comfort and ease of use this is the model for you.

Pride Mobility S74 mobility scooterIt’s great for outdoors. With four 3″ x 9″ solid wheels and an 80-inch turning radius. Runs well over grass and dirt. Probably a bit bulky for indoor use. You might want to look at other 3-wheel models for use indoors.

All-new frame design easily disassembles into 5 lightweight pieces for convenient transport and storage.

With a charger port in tiller (convenient off-board dual voltage charger can charge battery pack on-board or off-board), and standard front LED lighting.  Includes 2 sets of easily changeable colored panels in Red and Blue

5. Invacare Lynx L-4 (Rating 4.4)

Invacare Lynx L-4 power scooter reviewThe Invacare Lynx power scooter offers customization for maximum comfort at a very affordable price. The four wheel base means it can be easily used indoors or outdoors. If you have very narrow hallways this may not be a great indoor chair for you. This scooter is great for people who have difficulty lifting their legs as it is very low to the ground.

  • Customization – the Invacare Lynx offers the ability to change armrest width, seat height, and tiller angle. This gives you more freedom to find a comfortable fit without spending thousands of dollars for customized chair.
  • Versatility – with a 300-pound weight limit and a four wheel design with a sturdy base this chair can get you through your grocery shopping on a long walk around the neighborhood.
  • Tires – the tires on this model are a flat free design which means if you run over a nail or a sharp piece of glass will not pop air filled tire. Instead, these tires are filled with foam. While there may be a little more noise from the tires than you would get with air-filled ones, these are much more durable.
  • Price – at under eight hundred dollars you get a scooter you can easily modify the fit your body and comfort level. The 300-pound weight limit is more than sufficient for most users in a 7-mile range is very acceptable for general use.

If you’re looking for an everyday chair with great value and functionality the Invacare Lynx is an option you should consider.

6. Active Care Spitfire 1420 EX (Rating 4.4)

Active Care Spitfire 1420 EX reviewThe best feature of the Active Care Spitfire is the ability to extend its range to up to 15 miles with optional heavy duty batteries. If you want the greatest range at an affordable price don’t overlook this chair. The stock batteries still offer a good range and the Spitfire can be disassembled for transportation.  You do need to purchase a wrench for disassembly so consider purchasing one when you buy. This scooter was designed with the active user in mind.

  • Range – this model has an excellent range if you’re willing to purchase the larger batteries. While it’d be great if the batteries were included, a 15-mile range makes the extra expense more than worth it.
  • Design – with four anti-tip wheels you can make the most out of your 15 miles. The open design also makes it easy to get on and off the chair. This is great if you plan on taking a chair vacation and want to move about see the sights.
  • Controls – the Active Care offers two options for speed control. You can either turn a dial or press the handle for more responsive speed changes. In situations where you need to adjust the speed frequently, this feels much more natural.
  • Adjustability – you can change the angle of the tiller and adjust the armrest or remove them entirely. If you are shopping or at a museum the freedom to remove the armrests can allow you to interact much more easily without getting up and down from the chair.

10 Key Features to Consider When Buying a Power Scooter

  1. Maneuverability

When looking for a power scooter you want to make sure the one you buy matches your needs. Some scooters do a great job of making sharp turns. If you plan on using your scooter mostly indoors this is especially important. You don’t want to get stuck trying to turn into another room. If your scooter will be mostly for outdoor travel you will want a model with more rugged wheels.

  2. Operating range

Not all mobility scooters are created equal. If you plan on doing a lot of traveling with your scooter you will want one that has a large operating range, that is, one that can go many miles on a charge. Some scooters have an operating range around 10 miles while others can go up to 30 miles or more before needing to be recharged. If you only plan on taking your scooter to the grocery store or on an occasional trip around the neighborhood in lower operating range is probably fine. If you want to go explore the Grand Canyon you definitely want to find a model with a long operating range.

  3. Max speed

The basic power scooters that you see provided in stores are often very slow. If you purchase your own mobility scooter you can choose a higher-speed model that may have a max speed of 20 miles an hour or more. If you have difficulty with your hands and precise steering movements you may want a slower scooter. A high-speed power scooter is great if you plan your scooter to get around town instead of car.

  4. Battery life

Battery life is incredibly important. If you battery is dead you are not to go anywhere you want pay careful attention to battery life when shopping around. You may be able to replace the battery on your scooter with a higher powered model but it’s best to purchase a scooter that has a battery life that will meet your needs from the get-go.

  5. Warranty

Hopefully, your mobility scooter will last you for many years. To get the most out of your scooter pay careful attention to the warranty. A good warranty means the manufacturer stands behind its product. Warranties may cover things like wheel malfunctions and seat cushions that wear out early. Often the warranty will pay for both labor and parts costs.

  6. Battery warranty

Batteries on power scooters often covered by separate warranty. Is very important to understand how long your battery is under warranty as this may be one of the most expensive parts replace and is the most vital. If your insurance covered your power scooter they may require you to use it for five or more years before buying a new one. You want to make sure you’re covered if your battery goes out before that period ends.

  7. Portability

If you plan to use your scooter only around the house you probably won’t need to worry too much about portability. However, most people user scooters both in the house and in town. Portability then becomes an important consideration. You want scooter you can get in and out of your car or load onto a car carrier. If portability is important, you might want to consider getting an electric wheelchair instead.

  8. Comfort

A power scooter should give you the maximum independence possible. For this to happen you need to be comfortable in it. If the seat rubs or your back is uncomfortable chances are the scooter is just going to sit in your garage. You may want to consider an ergonomic seat and consult a physical therapist or other professional before you buy the scooter.

  9. Accessories

Mobility scooters offer many different accessories depending upon the model. If you use crutches you want to find a scooter that has an attachable crutch holder. If you plan on using your scooter outdoors at night you will want one that has a headlight. Some scooters are also specialized for people who have difficulty using one of their hands. These scooters have special adapters for use with one hand. Depending on the brand you may also have a choice of color. If you’re going to use you scooter a lot get one that looks fun see you can enjoy riding in it.

  10. Cost

Power scooters vary significantly in cost. The chair you choose will be dictated in part by how much you can afford or how much your insurance company is willing to pay. If you want to scooter that your insurance company does not cover they may pay up to their maximum amount and allow you to cover the rest. You may also have pay for accessories like headlights and crutch holders unless you have a doctor’s note stating that the accessory is medically necessary.

A power scooter can change your life. Walkers and manual wheelchairs can tire you out and trying to keep up with everyone on long trips can be exhausting.

Mobility scooters give you back your freedom whether that’s around town or on a road trip.

Why you need a defibrillator (AED) at home/office

SCA or Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Every year hundreds of thousands of people die when the heart stops or enters a fatal rhythm. CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can buy vital time for emergency responders to arrive with more advanced life support equipment. However, the survival rate with CPR is still abysmally low. Few people make it to the emergency room and fewer survive discharge.

AEDs can greatly increase survival rates

Not only do more people survive when given prompt treatment with an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), but they have a better recovery. Not too long ago AEDs were limited to doctor’s offices and other medical settings. Now you can find them in malls, grocery stores, schools, and on airplanes.

Modern AEDs are extremely simple to use

Most offer voice direction through every step of the process. The machine explains how to apply the pads to the chest of the person, and then analyzes the heart rhythm to determine if applying electric shock will be helpful. These machines are very accurate and will not apply a shock if it is not needed so don’t be afraid to hook someone up if you are in doubt.

The newest models will also walk you through performing CPR if the heart rhythm is not shock-able. No longer are the life-saving devices only for medical offices.

You don’t even need to get a prescription from your doctor

Many businesses purchase these for the safety of employees and any potential customers. Prices have now decreased to the point where a home AED is viable. Even if you don’t have a heart condition remember that many people who experience sudden cardiac death never knew there was a problem. The best way to be prepared is to have an AED on hand. If you have to wait ten or twelve minutes for a paramedic to arrive and then assess the situation it’s likely too late for them to save your life. Having an AED on hand can make all the difference. You don’t even need to get a prescription from your doctor.

Which AED device should I get

philips heartstart home aedConsider purchasing something like the Phillips Heart Start Home Defibrillator. This is the unit our office has and I was able to see for myself how important having one of the devices on hand is.

It was just another day at the office when Steve (in his 40s), one of my colleagues from our sales team suddenly collapsed with no warning. The first witness panicked and didn’t know what to do but another guy from our office immediately picked up the AED and applied the pads on my coworker. The machine gave clear voice instructions for where to place pads and warned everyone to step away before it gave an electric shock. After one shock my coworker’s heart restarted. We were all very relieved. Then, just moments later his heart went out again. The device was able to shock him once more and get his heart working. After a few weeks in the hospital and some recovery at home he is now able to get back to work! If the AED had not been on hand I think it’s likely that he would’ve died.

It totally shifted my perspective, witnessing something so serious as this and I can only imagine how grateful Steve is to our company’s safety officer who had decided to get the equipment even though it’s not obligatory by law.

While AEDs like the Phillips HeartStart Home defibrillator are still somewhat costly they have greatly decreased in price. If you have a medical condition that affects your heart your insurance may pay for an AED.

However, even if you have to pay out of pocket these devices are well worth the money. For under $1500 dollars you can provide life-saving treatment. Larger offices may need to invest in a commercial grade AED but even these are not that expensive. If you do have a medical condition you may be to write off your out-of-pocket expenses for an AED on your taxes. Businesses can consider the cost of an AED a business expense and also deduct it from their taxes.

Don’t be afraid to use the device

Many people are afraid of using one of these devices and causing harm the fact of the matter is you are very likely to save someone’s life if you follow simple directions the AED gives you.

AEDs were designed to be used by almost anyone, in any situation, during what is likely to be an extremely stressful event. Considering that many people do not even know CPR, the instruction provided by the AEDs can be very useful even if it doesn’t deliver a shock. If you are nervous about using AED and have one in your home or office consider taking a class or purchasing an instructional DVD.

If you get a chance to practice and familiarize yourself with the device before you have to use it are more likely to use it correctly when it counts. If you’re purchasing one of the units for your office is a good idea to train all of your workers in the use of the machine. You never know who might need help. My coworker was a seemingly healthy man in his 40s who no one expected to have a heart condition. Our office now has an AED installed in all the office workers are trained in its use.

I hope you never have to use it but with all the people going in and out I feel a lot better that if someone had a problem we can help.

MicrodermMD Unit

MicrodermMD home microdermabrasion machine review

My sister really loves facials (and manicures and pedicures, pretty much any sort of pampering!) but with her son (my nephew) she never has time for a spa treatment anymore. She is also notoriously hard to shop for and had a birthday coming up. I thought this would make a perfect birthday gift.

I went ahead and ordered the MicrodermMD (a product of TrophySkin) with a less abrasive head based on previous customer reviews.

My sister really loves the Microderm MD and her skin does fine with the included diamond tip. This may be the very first present she hasn’t returned.

MicrodermMD Unit

When she convinced me to try it I had her use the gentler diamond tip as my skin tends to be sensitive. I thought it felt pleasant but it is a bit noisy and probably not something I would sit around doing!

My six-year-old nephew actually ended up getting curious about what we were doing with the suction so we had to give him a little facial treatment. My sister and I were pretty amused but I don’t think he’ll ever interrupt “girly sister time” again. We all had a good laugh about it and now I have another story to tell when he brings home his first girlfriend.

I have to admit the suction does weird me out a little bit but my sister didn’t mind it at all so perhaps it’s an acquired taste!

I was a little hesitant to purchase the MicrodermMD unit when Amazon carries several, lower priced units. I paid $289 but since we have Prime, shipping was free and I knew any returns would be easy. I wish the MicrodermMD included different tips as part of the standard package instead of making you purchase them separately. For close to $300 dollars I just feel that they could have included at least two different tips.

The slightly cheaper Kendal Microdermabrasion unit I looked at first came with 9 different tips from fine to coarse and in different sizes as well which seems convenient. Not to mention you have to replace filters and purchase a new diamond tip every year or so.

I know you can get hand held microderm kits for quite a bit cheaper but those just don’t seem to have the power that something like the MicrodermMD has. If I am going to spend over $100 bucks on something to treat facial skin I want to know it will work and not cause any harm to the skin!

In the end I went with this model because I could use my Prime shipping to return it if it didn’t work and most reviewers seem pretty happy with it. If my sister was having professional facials done still, I would probably have just gotten her a gift certificate but all things considered I think this was a good investment.

My sister has had the unit for about two months and I don’t see a huge difference. Of course the before and after pictures they post are always more dramatic that you see in real life. My sister does have generally healthy skin and looks much younger than her age naturally so perhaps the treatments would make more of a difference for an older person or someone whose skin has had a lot of skin exposure.

That being said my sister really does like the machine and says her face feels much better after using it regularly. This is definitely a purchase where your expectations play a huge role.

  • If you have the money and enjoy feeling pampered without dragging yourself to the spa on a regular basis go for it!
  • If you are expecting to look ten years younger you will be disappointed.

I can certainly see this as a way to keep your skin feeling fresh between spa treatments and you might be able to save some money in the long run by running to the spa less! I think the best things you can do for your skin are stay out of the sun and away from cigarette smoke!

As far as maintenance I can’t speak to that myself. My sister hasn’t voiced any complaints and her machine still seems to be working well so I assume she is able to keep it clean without any problems. If she can fit in the cleaning between a full time job and a very active six year old I can’t imagine it being very involved.

I did notice a few reviewers talking about problems with the cord but so far my sister hasn’t had any issues. Crossing my fingers that the MicrodermMD lasts for a couple of years. If we have to replace it after the three year warranty period (and doesn’t everything always go out right after the warranty ends?) I will probably go ahead and order another one for my sister since she enjoys it so much.

microdermabrasion vs chemical peel

Microdermabrasion vs Chemical peel split face test

Doctor Gavin Chan, a cosmetic physician from Victorian Cosmetic Institute performs this split face test on a patient to determine the effect of microdermabrasion vs chemical peel.

He uses chemical peel on one part of the subjects face and microderm on the other half. In the end the subject and doctor Chan give their opinion on which treatment worked better.

Both, microdermabrasion and chemical peels, exfoliate the skin – an important process to maintaining a healthy and glowing skin.

Doctor Chan explains that we are looking at two very different procedures here. Microdermabrasion is a physical process where you put suction on the skin and suck the skin up to a diamond coated head which gently debrades the dead skin off.

“Chemical peels do a similar job except that they use chemicals – usually light acid – to exfoliate the skin.”

Exfoliation is good for a number of reasons. It can be used to make the skin look brighter and give it a glow. Or it can be used to treat some medical problems like acne. It can also be used to reduce sun damage and improve skin pigmentation, such as sun spots on the skin or freckles.
